If you're creating content consistently but still feel like you're manually piecing together where your next coaching client is going to come from, the problem may not be your content.

It may be what happens after someone becomes interested.

A sales funnel gives your potential clients a clear path from discovering you to taking the next step with your business. That doesn't mean you need a complicated series of pages and automations. It means you need to know what should happen at each stage of the customer journey.

Here's how I think about it.

Start With the Offer, Not the Funnel

Before you build anything, you need to know what you're actually trying to sell. Your funnel should be built around a specific offer and a specific type of buyer.

A coach selling a $97 self-paced course may need a very different path than a coach selling a $5,000 private coaching package. The price, sales process, level of trust required, and amount of information your prospect needs before buying all affect the funnel.

So don't start by asking, "What pages do I need?"

    Start with:

What does someone need to understand, believe, or do before they're ready to buy this offer?

That answer should drive the funnel.

Decide What the First Step Should Be

Not every person who discovers your coaching business is ready to book a call. For some offers, the logical first step may be a lead magnet. For others, it may be a workshop, assessment, application, or another useful resource.

The goal is to give someone who is interested a clear next step without forcing them into a sales conversation before they're ready.

    For example:

    • Instagram content → lead magnet → email follow-up → coaching offer
    • LinkedIn content → application → qualification → strategy call
    • Podcast → workshop → nurture → coaching program

There isn't one funnel that every coach should copy. The right funnel depends on how your offer is sold.

    Build the Lead Capture Step

If someone leaves your website or social profile without giving you a way to continue the relationship, you may never get another opportunity to talk to them. That's why lead capture matters.

Your lead magnet should solve a specific problem that your ideal client already knows they have. It doesn't need to be enormous. A useful checklist, assessment, guide, short training, or framework can be enough if it attracts the right person.

The important part is that the resource should have a natural connection to your paid offer. If your lead magnet attracts people who would never buy your coaching, you're going to spend a lot of time collecting leads that don't actually help your business.

If you want to see how the capture step fits into the bigger picture, I wrote about how to build a lead generation system for coaches that turns traffic into actual leads instead of just attention.

Give New Leads a Reason to Keep Engaging

The download itself isn't the end of the funnel. It's the beginning.

Someone may download your resource because they're interested in solving a problem, but that doesn't mean they're ready to hire you that day. Your follow-up should continue the conversation.

You might educate them about the problem, help them understand what is keeping them stuck, explain your approach, answer common objections, and eventually invite them toward the appropriate next step. That could be an application, a consultation, a coaching offer, or another action.

The point is not to send endless promotional emails. The point is to stop making every lead start over from scratch every time they interact with your business. If you want help setting this up, my email follow-up service is built around exactly this kind of nurture sequence.

Make Qualification Part of the Funnel

If you sell higher-ticket coaching, your calendar is valuable. You don't necessarily want every person who downloads your free resource booking a call.

Depending on your offer, an application can help you understand whether someone is actually a potential fit before they reach your calendar. That can include questions about:

    • what they want help with
    • where they're currently stuck
    • what they've already tried
    • what they want to accomplish
    • whether they're ready to invest in solving the problem

Qualification isn't about creating unnecessary barriers. It's about making sure the sales conversation starts with the right people.

Don't Forget What Happens After Someone Buys

A sales funnel shouldn't end at the payment screen.

Once someone becomes a client, there are still important steps:

    • confirmation
    • payment processing
    • contracts
    • intake
    • onboarding
    • scheduling
    • welcome communication

Those pieces can be connected so the client knows what happens next without you manually sending every instruction. That is where a funnel starts becoming part of a larger business system.

The Funnel Is Not Finished When You Publish It

This is the part I think coaches overlook the most. You don't build a funnel, publish it, and then forget about it for six months.

Once people start moving through it, the data tells you what needs attention. Maybe people are visiting but not opting in. Maybe they're opting in but not engaging with your emails. Maybe they're clicking your offer but not applying. Maybe they're booking calls but aren't qualified.

The funnel gives you a way to see where those problems are happening. That's exactly why I created the FOCUS Framework for ongoing optimization: Filter & Qualify Leads, Optimize Thank You Page, Connect With Segmented Follow-Up, Understand, Simplify, & Adjust, and Scale What Works.

A funnel is a system. And systems get better when you actually pay attention to what they're doing.

You can make the system more sophisticated later. You don't need to build everything at once. You need a clear path that matches the offer you're actually selling.
