Get a Free Funnel Strategy →One of the most frustrating pieces of advice for an online coach is: "Just grow your audience." That sounds helpful until you're sitting there with 1,500 followers and wondering why almost none of them are becoming clients.
The size of your audience can matter. But it isn't the only thing that matters. A smaller audience of people with the exact problem you solve can be much more valuable than a huge audience that isn't interested in buying your offer.
You Need the Right People, Not Just More People
Imagine two coaches. Coach A has 20,000 followers, but most of them aren't the right fit for the offer. Coach B has 2,000 followers and regularly gets conversations with people who have the exact problem the coach solves. Which business has the stronger lead-generation foundation? The answer isn't automatically Coach A.
That's why I wouldn't start by asking how to get more followers. I'd ask: are the right people finding you?
20,000 followers — but most aren't the right fit for the offer.
2,000 followers — but they have the exact problem you solve.
Make Your Content Specific Enough to Attract Buyers
If your content tries to appeal to everyone, it becomes harder for the right person to recognize themselves in it. Specific content can do the opposite.
Instead of talking about "success," talk about the specific problem your ideal client is actively trying to solve. Instead of "how to improve your business," you might address a specific stage of growth or a specific obstacle your client is experiencing.
The goal is recognition. You want the right person to think: she's talking about exactly what I'm dealing with.
Create a Clear Next Step
Attention doesn't automatically become a lead. There needs to be a bridge. That could be a resource, an assessment, a workshop, an email list, an application, or a consultation. The right choice depends on your offer. But don't make the person figure out what to do next.
Follower count doesn't matter if the journey is broken.
Search Can Put You in Front of People Who Are Already Looking
This is one of the reasons search is particularly interesting for coaches. Someone searching for a solution is already telling you something about their intent. They may not know you yet. They may not follow you. They may have never seen your Instagram account. But they're actively looking for an answer.
Useful search content gives you another way to reach people without needing to first convince them to follow you. A well-structured sales funnel can then turn that search traffic into actual leads instead of letting it bounce.
Referrals Can Be More Valuable Than Followers
A referral starts with borrowed trust. Someone who knows you says, "I think you should talk to this coach." That's a very different starting point from a stranger scrolling past your Reel.
Build relationships with people who already serve the type of clients you want to reach. That could include complementary service providers, podcast hosts, communities, professional networks, or other businesses with overlapping audiences.
Don't Let Small Lead Volume Fool You
If you're getting five qualified leads a month, that may sound tiny. But five qualified leads are not the same as five random email subscribers. If two of those people become clients, your system may be working better than you think.
That's why I care about what happens after the lead is generated. You need to know whether the people entering your system are actually moving toward your offer.
A Small Audience Can Become a Real Pipeline
You don't need millions of impressions. You need the right people, a relevant reason to raise their hand, a clear next step, follow-up, qualification, and a sales conversation. That is much more useful than obsessing over follower count.
If you're already getting attention but don't have a clear way to turn it into qualified leads, I'd start by looking at the lead generation system behind your marketing.
